Navigating the Green Book–NYPL Link
“The Green Book was a travel guide published between 1936 and 1966 that listed hotels, restaurants, bars, gas stations, etc. where black travelers would be welcome. NYPL Labs is in the process of extracting the data from the Green Books themselves and welcomes you to explore its contents in new ways.”
You can map a trip during 1947 or 1956, and chart out the establishments where an African American traveler would have been allowed to eat and sleep. While it’s heartbreaking to know that such a guide was necessary, today it provides insight into the way African Americans dealt with being treated as second class citizens.

Great post! The Green Book was the brain child of. Victor Green, a postal worker who used his work connections to gather info. I posted on my blog about him a few months ago as well.
